Unfortunately your friend is correct - the alternate I can think is withdraw your present application and file I-140 and I-485 simultaneously now - other please tell whether this will be a good approach for their benefit. Can EB3 file concurrently I 140 and I 485.
But how to revoke an already submitted I-140 Eb-2?
By the way, many a time such a case would be issued an RFE and then you could change (not aware of the exact terminology for this) it to Eb-3.

It's extremely difficult, if not impossible to maintain PR status in both US and Canada due to the residency requirements. Once you get your US GC the best thing to do is to abandon your Canadian PR if you intend to live in the US and make your home here. Frankly I don't see any benefit of mainatining your Canadaian PR. If you try to do that it might even jeopardize your GC. Google and you will find lots of advice on this issue. I plan to live and work here in the US.
Congrats Lasantha :)
One question: in one thread you mentioned you've also got canadian PR. I did apply for canadian immigration, got approval but have to land before 24th april. My 485 was filed in july 2007, EAD, AP aprpoved and PD for october 2005 got current in the May bulletin. I am thinking of abandoning the CA PR as even if I get that, I will have to abandon it when I will get for US PR. So the question is, what will the CA PR benefit when you already have GC?

My Indian passport is about to expire in Oct 2009. Is there step by step instructions available on IV forums for filling in the online form for passport renewal on Indian Consulate - Chicago website.
Thanks.

In the case you are laid off and are on H1... u can file for foreclosure :-( or bankrupcy.. and walk out of this country.
Yes, that is the basic message.
I am completely opposed to non-GC holders buying a house. Tell me something - tomorrow I get out of status and can't find a job for 6 months and finally decide to leave, you think I am a fool to use up all my savings to disburse loans??? Its unthinkable. 6 months without a job is not far-fetched, I know several folks who were in the this situation. Without an employer my immigration status would be invalid. EAD/H1-B is not GC. Either you are a gc holder or you aren't.
Buying house is optional, paying off the mortgage is NOT.
I would buy if my family had dual incomes, we had our permanent resident status, long term plans to live in the US, income to house ratio was right (1:3 or something reasonable not 1:7 as it was/is with most middle class folks in the Bay area) and so on.
http://patrick.net/housing/crash.htm
This is decision one must very carefully make. Its not like buying a car or doing your groceries.
I refrained from writing "you" instead wrote "one" and "I", I don't want to be misunderstood and beaten up on that:)
Agreed.
In any case, I don't have the same kind of writing skills as Slumdog. It must be evident by now. :)

It is the fourth option.
- EB3I just bury their heads in sand looking for a miracle and they have lost hope.
Also, no clear directionality from leadership.
Hi Raju,
You hit the nail on its head. The Eb3I participation is very very less. Look at EB2 specific threads. There are 25000 views. EB3I specific threads is a mere 2000. In fact EB3I is supposed to be a biggger group.
Here are my theories:
- EB3I guys lost hope in IV and stopped visiting IV
- EB3I guys work in low level jobs without access to Internet even in office or home (certainly cannot be the case)
- EB3I does not know about IV at all for the past 4 years (hmmm...)
- EB3I just bury their heads in sand looking for a miracle
This is a bigger problem than the EB3I backlog problem.
I know many guys in this forum who are regular contributers are missing here. What really is going on?

GCPerm, Good answers. I commend you for that.
Otherwise, I sincerely believe even after I get my green card, we should focus on resolving this green card backlog mess and if we can get green card holders and US Citizens to support this cause it woule be better.
Maybe you are not able to relate to what EB3 candidates go through. Yes it is a choice we made to wait in this country. A lot of EB3 people qualify for EB2 based on their qualifications and experience but were put into EB3 due to company's choice or attorney's mistake.
But no person should be made to wait for an answer of whether their application is going to be approved for 8-10 years.
The pre-adjudication in my opinion is a farce as it was more done to get their(USCIS) inventory calculated properly than ensuring the person is clear from all angles. Because, I know of about 5 people who are in EB2 who are sent RFE's now, after their dates have become current. They were supposedly pre-adjudicated as per the IO during the interview at the local office. some of them were fingerprints, some of them just to verify whether the husband and wife are still married etc.
Coming back to my point, there are EB3 applicants now who have a priority date of 2006, 2008 2009 etc. Can we accept a process which asks people to wait for 20 years to get a Yay or Nay for their application is the question. I think it is unacceptable. I believe more green card holders and US Citizens who are deciding to put their roots in USA should help the country to better the legal immigration system first before anything else.
Regarding citizenship as I mentioned before if you think you will not bail out after starting a campaign, then go ahead and lead it.
Let us not criticise any one further and look for very efficient way of presenting this to the right people. We welcome more ideas from other members then we will consilidate them and decide how we go with this.

Agreed, Elderly people just want to be with their friends/relatives and want to be in the country they have grown up in and lived all their lives.
This is a thread that has no relevance to IV or the community that is suffering from retrogression, especially if you are a EB candidate from India & China. We need some energy devoted to the following:
Multi year EAD/AP
Recapture wasted visa numbers
Eliminate counting dependents on the Adjustment application from numerical limitations
Do away with country limits
If we can hit the target with even ONE of the demands above we have a won a battle with the larger war looming in on us and that is successfully surviving the GC's tumultuous journey.
Every discussion on the forum should concentrate on solving one of the issues above and the concept of citizenship after 5/10/15 is total nonsense.

Agreed, It is very unfortunate for people stuck in backlogs and I feel your pain... But would you rather have seen USCIS waste over 40000 visas by the end of the year without any PD movement (as reported by some on this forum)? We would have had another thread here blasting the inefficiency and unfairness of USCIS.
Bottomline, I would not like to work in USCIS right now.. They are basically damned if they do, damned if they dont. That said, I do hope that BECs get their act together like USCIS is trying to and get everyones labor cleared by the deadline before the next retrogression hits.
Guys,
Let's not assume that visas wasted by USCIS would have been allocated to India or China. This would not have happened as these countries can not get more visa numbers than the numerical cap of 7% of the world-wide EB quota.

This is depressing at best but lets take what lifes throws at us(in this case USCIS) and turn into positive.
We should have some action items and follow through. Below I have comeup with some as starting point..
1. Prepare campaign materials, message (short and long), stories etc regarding this backlog.
2. Pass it along to media. Schedule meetings with Senators, congressmen through state chapters and educate them.
3. Volunteer in our communites as groups and spread the message and hopefully get some media attention.
4. Contribute to IV for lobbying.
5. Stay positive and don't stress too much regarding the GC.
Ideas don't cost us much but what we need now is actions.
